THE SAFE & SOUND PROTOCOL

WHAT IS THE SSP?

The Safe & Sound Protocol was developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, author of Polyvagal Theory, which has revolutionized how therapists understand Trauma.  This protocol is highly researched and maintained at the highest level.

"This non-invasive intervention involves listening to music that has been processed specifically to retune the nervous system (regulating state) to introduce a sense of safety and the ability to socially engage...."The music trains the auditory pathways by focusing on the frequency envelope of human speech. As the client learns to process these speech-related frequencies, they improve the functioning of two cranial nerves that are important for promoting overall social behavior. Cranial Nerve VII (Facial Nerve) helps clients focus on human voice and tune out irrelevant frequencies. Cranial Nerve X (Vagus Nerve) enables self-soothing and autonomic regulation."

The SSP is a research-based therapy showing significant results in just five days in the following areas:
  • Social and emotional difficulties
  • Auditory sensitivities
  • Anxiety and trauma related challenges
  • Inattention
  • Stressors that impact social engagement
  • Issues related to the Autism Spectrum

A BRIEF VIDEO DESCRIBING the SSP                                     A BRIEF VIDEO EXPLAINING POLYVAGAL THEORY

SSP is best when customized to the client, but essentially involves 5 hours of listening (SSP Core) in the office plus 10 hours of optional, self-paced listening that can be done at home.

For at home use, you'll want over-the-ear headphones (these should NOT be noise-cancelling).
If you don't have these, you can get them HERE.

Coming Soon in-person in Nashville for adults 19 & up.

The Safe & Sound Protocol is a stand-alone modality to reduce symptoms of trauma & increase sensory integration & compliments other therapies & healing modalities.

These are some of the things that people experience that can be addressed with the Safe & Sound Protocol:

Feeling like a "highly sensitive person"
Difficulty editing out background noise either at home or in public places
Feeling easily irritated by sounds that others don't seem to mind or even notice
Light or alert sleep, sounds cause interruption in sleep regularly or difficulty reaching deep sleep/restful sleep
Being in public or with groups is physically or emotionally draining
Repetitive sounds are agitating (beeping, music that has repeating base, etc.)
Hearing sounds from very far away such as a lawn mower from down the street or the neighbors vacuum
Trouble connecting with others or it seems others misunderstand intentions of what's trying to be communicated
Trouble interpreting the body language of others or their vocal tone & intonation
Jumping to conclusions before others can fully express themselves, losing friendships but can't understand what happened
Incidence of an accident or traumatic event & haven't been able to feel a sense of safety since the event happened
Any attributes associated with the autism spectrum
Any attributes associated with ADHD/ADD diagnosis
